Xenon metal halide bulb demonstration and theory
Here’s a demo and info session on a xenon metal halide bulb that I made a reflector for and use as a work/desk light. It was originally a HID retrofit kit for automotive lighting. Metal halide is a type of high pressure discharge lamp that is basicly the evolution of the mercury vapor lamp. It uses very similar control gear (ballasts, ignitors, etc) but adds various halide salts to enhance light output and color spectrum. They have the best color rendering index of all high pressure arc lamps, as high as 0.96, second only to xenon short arc lamps used in large movie projectors. They are second in efficiency in lumens/watt only to sodium arc lamps. They are commonly used to light areas such as gyms, sports fields, streets, parking lots, warehouses, and, of course, ice arenas. Current offereings in high output fluorescent lighting such as T8 and T5 fixtures are gaining favor for indoor lighting since they are more efficient, can output equivalent levels of light at high color rendering indexes, put out less radiant heat, are easier to maintain, provide more diffuse lighting, and are easier to implement in ways to enable various levels of light output for a given installation. This example is a xenon discharge lamp that uses xenon for higher initial light output to make it more practical for use in automotive headlights. The ballast also has a pulse start ignitor that is strong enough to hot strike the bulb, meaning it can restart when still hot from running. The voltage …
CCTV Glare caused by Sodium Street Lighting
HID (High intensity discharge) lamps could be used in CCTV. They are efficient, provide good colour rendition and are long life — up to 12000 hours. However, they suffer from a slow start (2-3mins) and cannot be turned on immediately after being turned off. High intensity discharge lamps are 60-80% efficient and compared to incandescent and fluorescent lamps provide much more light from a smaller package. HID forms include low pressure sodium (unsuitable for CCTV due to its yellow tinge), high pressure sodium (which is more acceptable but produces worse colour rendition than Metal Halide) and Metal Halide. Metal Halide HID bulbs provide a very natural, cool clear White-Light with excellent colour discrimination. HID lamps are commonly used for street lighting and in car headlights.

2004 Dodge Ram HID Conversion 6000k
What a genuine 6000k Philips HID Conversion kit looks like on my truck.
Today I installed DDM Tuning 35W H7 4500K HID XENON lights on my car and went for a drive.
Sorry for the length of this video but I wanted to capture different angles as I was driving to show how these lights shine. I am very happy with this kit and for shipped to my door you can’t beat it. The ballast is smaller and thinner than a pack of cigarettes. Who needs 55w kit that will shorten the life of the bulbs and not have accurate color? 35W is plenty of brightness although my camera makes it look like these lights are not that bright. You can compare the light of the cars I pass. I will also order another set for the fog lights. My visibility is improved a lot as these are about 4 times brighter than my stock 55W H7 bulbs at almost half the power consumption. They do draw about 5 amps each during ignition but once warmed up within 30 seconds they use less than stock 55w bulbs. Color accuracy is right on and I’m glad I chose the 4500K. They do not have any sign of blue when fully warmed up and I wanted that. The ballast and wiring are of good quality but the lights didn’t come with any instructions so i had to use some common sense during installation. Also the spacers for the H7 type bulb did not work with my bulb fastening clips so i didnt use them and the clips themselves have enough tension to heep the bulbs in there. After installation I had to lower the beam position just a little and made sure I’m not lighting up the trees like some morons out there do with their lights. My car’s headlights are well designed that they will not have a lot of stray …
HPS Retrofit lamp, Heat Start type
I found this unique light bulb at a Habitat for Humanity Re-Store. It is designed to allow older mercury vapor type industrial, parking lot & street lights to High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lighting for greater efficency – much as a CFL would retrofit an incandescent lamp without having to change the entire light fixture. Eye Lighting (Iwasaki, made in Japan) offered this early version that uses an incandescent filament to heat the lamp to facilitate ignition of the arc. The current version of this lamp uses a “FEC” internal ignitor which is better and more reliable, but not as interesting!
